Perhaps like Christopher Nolan‘s take on Batman, Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man movies (okay, except the third one), have set a pretty high bar for everyone’s favorite webslinger. Try as they did, Sony, Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield couldn’t get the mix right on the failed "The Amazing Spider-Man" movies, but Marvel is now getting their crack at Peter Parker, and honcho Kevin Feige knows that he’s got a big job ahead.
“We’re going to have it be its own thing but some of those Spider-Man films… I think ‘Spider-Man 2’ is one of the best superhero movies ever, so that’s a lot to live up to,” he told SuperHeroHype. But just how will this new iteration of Spider-Man differ? Well, as has been rumored for the past couple of months, Feige and co. will be drawing on the influence of one of key portraitists of young adult life.
“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” he told Birth Movies Death. “Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”
That’s certainly an interesting notion, and meshes well with Feige’s previous comments that we’d be spending more time with a high school age Peter Parker than previously. But the key will be integrating him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it sounds like placing the character in world where so much has already happened will bring some new dimension to the portrayal.
"The biggest thing … is that it takes place in this universe. It’s the first time that you’ll be able to see Spider-Man like he was in the comics, as a very different type of hero when compared to the other heroes in the universe," Feige told Zap2It. "Up until this point in the other Spidey films–some of which are some of the best superhero movies ever made–he was the only hero, and now he’s not. Now he’s a kid in Queens with these powers and has other [superheroes] to look to."
