Got a Tip?

Neill Blomkamp Posts Concept Art Of What Appears To Be An Abandoned ‘Alien’ Movie Project

null“Was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph,” director Neill Blomkamp tweeted off on New Year’s Day, setting off a firestorm of fan speculation. Was the “District 9” and “Elysium” director — who has his latest sci-fi film “Chappie” arriving in March — working on the next “Prometheus” film or another spin-off from Ridley Scott’s “Alien”? “Woulda rocked. Was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created,” he later said, suggesting he was developing some kind of related xenomorph film, and that the project had fallen apart.

Well, apparently not. Or at least not anymore. While Blomkamp did post six Instagram photos that looked like concept art and drawings inspired from “Alien,” “Aliens” and “Prometheus,” Blomkamp came clean. “Ps this has nothing to do with the studio,” he wrote on Twitter. “I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work- They didn’t really even know I was working on it ha.”

Based on those comments, and if we want to speculate… Blomkamp had commissioned (or illustrated himself) some ‘Alien’-like concept art that he might potentially pitch to the studio at some point, but then decided to abandon it, but share with his followers regardless? Something like that maybe? “Woulda rocked” definitely does suggest the gears were turning on some kind of idea, though with a young Sigourney Weaver in the artwork, including her character at that age might prove to be a little difficult without some heavy CGI. We’ll assume someone will ask Blomkamp about it during the “Chappie” press run and then we might be able to file it under “cool film ideas that never came to pass” or maybe even one day, if the lore grows, part of the canon of films in the Greatest Movies Never Made. Though for the skeptics out there, and to be fair, this Twitter account isn’t verified so it’s possible it could be a hoax. Though on the flipside, in 2010, Blomkamp was named one of the people who most affect our world in TIME’s annual 100 issue and that write-up was penned admiringly by Ridley Scott himself. Maybe it’s a video game as some have speculated? Check out the artwork below and see what you think.
