Lovers of New Zealand-born folk-rock rejoiced yesterday when reports spread like wildfire over the internet that the beloved HBO comedy series "Flight Of The Conchords" would be returning to the network. The show ended its two-season run back in 2009, leaving fans champing at the bit for more, but several outlets reported that in an interview with The Guardian, co-Conchord Jemaine Clement had announced that he was working on a four-part revival of the show for HBO.
Those outlets evidently didn’t read the story properly, because Clement said nothing of the sort. What he actually said is that he’s working on a brand-new comedy for the network with "Eagle Vs. Shark" director Taika Waititi, with whom he just made cult vampire mockumentary "What We Do In The Shadows." No further details are forthcoming, but given how much fun ‘Shadows’ is, this is certainly good news.
Clement did say that there have been idle conversations about a possible "Flight Of The Conchords" movie with collaborators Bret McKenzie and director James Bobin, but they haven’t progressed further. "We talk about a movie every so often," he told the paper. "Sometimes it feels like we lost a lot of impetus over the last couple of years." And no wonder: McKenzie and Bobin have made two Muppets movies together, and the latter is currently director blockbuster sequel "Alice In Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass," due for release in 2016. The other pair are also working on an original musical movie inspired in part by "Labyrinth."
Clement, meanwhile, best known outside of Conchords for playing the bad guy in "Men In Black 3," has another acting gig lined up, in "People, Places and Things," a new film about a graphic novelist from "Grace Is Gone" and "The Winning Season" helmer James Strouse.
