“Spy Films Are Only As Good As Their Villains”: Matthew Vaughn Talks ‘Kingsman’ Sequel, Reveals Title

KingsmanIf it didn’t lay the path for "Deadpool," then it could be argued that the success of the R-rated "Kingsman: The Secret Service" certainly boosted the confidence of 20th Century Fox. The film was an unexpected box-office smash, earning $414 million worldwide, and of course, a sequel has been ordered. It will be short Colin Firth, but will see the fast-rising star Taron Egerton returning to the lead role, with Julianne Moore and Halle Berry among the new players. But in chatting with Empire, Vaughn shared his reservations about returning to the movie, which he reveals is titled "Kingsman: The Golden Circle."

"I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot," he explained.

Fair play to Vaughn, but I’d argue Samuel L. Jackson‘s baddie and his scissor-legs sidekick weren’t exactly great baddies in the first go-round, so things can only improve from here. Meanwhile, the filmmaker admits that while many fans want to see action sequences on the scale of church set piece from the first film, he’s cooking up something…different….

"You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before."

Among them will be a scene involving "a massive f***ing frankfurter." Okay, then.

"Kingsman: The Golden Circle" opens on June 16, 2017. [Comic Book Movie]
