Got a Tip?

‘Terminator Genisys’ Producer Says Franchise Is “Re-Adjusting,” But Not On Hold

Terminator: GenisysNo franchise truly stays dead these days, and while word circulated last week that the planned "Terminator Genisys" sequels were on hold following the films middling box office reception and critical drubbing, that’s not quite the case. Producer Dana Goldberg recently stopped by The Wrap’s 6th Annual Media Leadership Conference, where she acknowledged there were challenges ahead, but affirmed plans for more ‘Terminator’ installments are still very much on the table.

“I wouldn’t say on hold, so much as re-adjusting,” she said. It seems the big part of figuring out the puzzle pieces in moving forward, is determining what will make future efforts a bigger success. Goldberg said that Skydance and co. will use “data and research to do a worldwide study and really talk to audiences about what they loved, and what maybe didn’t work for them, so that the next we take with the franchise is the right one.”

“We are not going to begin production at the beginning of next year, because again, it would be silly to not have to worry about what audiences have to say,” she added.

So, I’d wager the ‘Genisys’ followups slated for 2017 and 2019 are probably not happening, however, the much talked about TV show still seems viable. “At Skydance, when we talk movies, we talk universes, even more than franchises,” Goldberg explained. “So the idea of a ‘Terminator’ TV show fits into that universe. All the steps have to be taken in unison.”

Whether on the big or small screen, ‘Terminator’ will be back. The question is whether or not audiences truly want more.
