Don't let that happy smiling couple deceive you. Raw-nerved and heartbreaking, Terrence Malick's "To The Wonder," starring Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko, is a tremendously earnest (which has earned it a fair share of detractors) and moving look at relationship in slow decline. And of course, mixed in are Malick's usual themes of faith tested and love abandoned. And it looks like it's getting ready to gorgeously shake you up next spring.
After premiering in Venice and hitting TIFF, things were slow going for the movie, with the uneven reviews (though we really liked it) not exactly forcing buyers to rush out and snap it up (though it presold pretty much everywhere else worldwide). Finally, Magnolia Pictures made a deal to close out September, and since then it has been never-ending updates about who is popping their heads in on the Austin set of Malick's untitled music-scene movie. Well, now a bit more news about "To The Wonder" as The Film Stage reveal that Magnolia are planning an April bow, though no specific date has been selected. But those of you overseas may be in luck.
According to Tom Linay at the film marketing company Digital Cinema Media, Studio Canal will release the film in February in the U.K. First "Skyfall" and now this? Guess we know how it feels now to get stuff second. At any rate, it hopefully means we'll be getting a bit more than the two stills that have served the movie so far — and gosh — maybe even a trailer. But joking aside, a new Malick movie is always a highlight on the calendar, so we can't wait. Stay tuned, more soon, hopefully….
