Yeah these haircuts look amazing right? Seems like the stuff of a good, “The Informant!” style comedy, doesn’t it? Well, hold on to that thought as Sony has stressed that David O. Russell‘s upcoming “American Hustle” is strictly a drama, though we think the ’70s setting and wardrobe are still pretty lol-worthy. But we’re sure once the story gets moving, all of that will be pushed to side because it’s based on a pretty fascinating true tale.
Featuring one of the best ensembles you’ll like see at the movies this year—Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, Louis C.K., Jennifer Lawrence, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Rohm, Dawn Olivieri, Jack Huston, Michael Pena and Robert De Niro—the movie follows a financial con artist (Bale) and his mistress/partner in crime (Adams) who are forced to work with an out of control federal agent (Cooper) to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters and politicians. It’s a lot of meaty roles and Russell promises we’re going to see sides to the cast we’ve never seen before.
“Everybody gets to do something we’ve never seen before,” the director told USA Today. “That’s exciting to me.” And as for the Oscar chances of the movie? Well, it’s being released this fall for a reason.
“The film has really become a fictitious movie that takes place during the time of Abscam, and has some Abscam in it. But it’s by no mean the true story of Abscam, the ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ version of that story,” producer Charles Roven told us earlier this year. “It’s an O. Russell picture through and through. But you know, he released ‘Silver Linings‘ during that period and before that he released ‘The Fighter‘ during that period. With the cast that we have, which is just amazing, we felt that if we could get the movie done in time, we should try for that time period as well.”
“American Hustle” opens in limited release on December 13th and everywhere on December 25th.
