Watch: Angelina Jolie Explains Why She Has No Wings In New ‘Maleficent’ Teaser Trailer; Plus New Poster & Photos

Maleficent

“I had wings once, they were strong, they were stolen from me.” It’s like “Maleficent” promo day from Disney or something. The studio has released a new teaser trailer, a poster, and Angelina Jolie talked to USA Today about the scenes where her character once had wings and could fly.

“You’re almost like a puppet with all these people moving [beneath you],” Jolie said. “When you go to the left or the right all of you have to move together. It’s a big dance with a lot of people.”

How did Jolie create sympathy for this devilish creation? Well, the character evidently has a lot of issues that explains to the why she became evil. “She has a darkness. And how do you make a film about someone who curses a baby and make them relatable? It’s like the worst thing you could possibly do! But I think the script that Linda [Woolverton (The Lion King)] wrote, has quite a deep understanding,” Jolie told EW recently. “The exercise wasn’t how can we have fun with a villain? It was: what turns people evil and vile and aggressive and cruel. What could have possibly happened to her that would get her to that moment in the christening? She wasn’t invited, so she’s pissed off?”

As for those rumors that Jolie could have directed the adaptation of “50 Shades Of Grey,” the actor/director sort of addresses them (though not really). Her response: “I—I was just—[laughs and shakes her head—for a long time. Jolie fully blushes.] [After another long, contemplative pause … ] I came very clear out of the gate: after ‘[In The Land Of] Blood and Honey,’ if I ever directed again, it would have to be a certain kind of film. You know, I’m looking forward to seeing what Sam [Taylor-Johnson] does with ‘50 Shades’ and she’s amazing. I—I think they’re just… it’s funny, I think with directing, you just think: I’m better at telling some stories than others but um, who knows?” Uhh, ok then!

Maybe it’s because those once-glorious wings were stolen? “Maleficent” hits theaters on May 30th. It’s possible a film like this could get a Cannes bow too (though certainly not in competition).
