Watch: Cobie Smulders Gets Knocked Up In The First Trailer For Sundance Drama ‘Unexpected’

Unexpected“I thought it could be just a very moving story about women, about the decision to have children,” Cobie Smulders said earlier this year about her upcoming indie “Unexpected.” “And from my side of the story, the decision of career versus motherhood, and trying to juggle those. At the same time, these two women are having the same experience, but under very different circumstances. The juxtaposition of that is very interesting to watch play out.”

You may know Smulders as Maria Hill in the Marvel films, or in from the CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother,” but she’s beginning to carve out an interesting indie career for herself too. At Sundance, she had two films in the line-up: Andrew Bujalski’s “Results” and Kris Swanberg’s “Unexpected.” The latter is seemingly a simple, stripped-down story of an an inner-city high school teacher who bonds with one of her students when she discover they are both pregnant (here’s our Sundance review). Here’s the synopsis:

When Samantha Abbott begins her final semester teaching science at a Chicago high school, she faces some unexpected news: She’s pregnant. Soon after, Samantha learns that one of her favorite students, Jasmine, has landed in a similar situation. “Unexpected” follows the two women as they embark on an unlikely friendship.

Co-starring Anders Holm, Gail Bean and Elizabeth McGovern, “Unexpected” lands in theaters and On Demand on July 24th. Watch the first trailer below.
