Oh, Bruce Willis. Every so often, it looks like he might be about to give something resembling a shit, as with his “Pulp Fiction” comeback, or the excellent 2012 double-bill of “Moonrise Kingdom” and “Looper,” two of his best ever performances. But then he reverts back to the same ol’ paycheck-chasing, barely-hitting theaters rote actioners that he’s become almost synonymous in recent years.
The latest is “Extraction,” which just debuted a trailer. Directed by Steven C. Miller, it sees Willis as a CIA agent kidnapped by terrorists aiming to disrupt the world’s telecommunications. When the agency abandons him, his son (played by “Twilight” actor Kellan Lutz, still getting work somehow) goes rogue in an attempt to save him.
Gina Carano also figures into the cast, as do D.B. Sweeney and poker player Dan Bilzerian, so you can see the level of ambition being aimed for here. From the clip below, it couldn’t look more like a generic action movie if it was called “Generic Action Movie,” and seems to exist purely to make the father/son pairing of Willis and Jai Courtney in the last “Die Hard” seem scintillating in comparison. Still, if you are somehow enthralled by this, you can catch the full thing in theaters and on VOD, the same day as “Star Wars” opens. Bold move, Lionsgate. Bold move.
