The transition from cinematographer into feature film director is trickier than you’d think. Arguably the DP has the best seat in the house, but there are countless examples of cinematographers turned director that didn’t quite work (see our feature: 15 Cinematographers Turned Director) and or outright failed. The latest director to make the leap is DP Reed Morano. On our Cinematographers On The Rise list from 2012, Morano made her name lensing indie pictures and Sundance faves like "Frozen River," "Kill Your Darlings," "The Skeleton Twins" and more.
Her directorial debut is "Meadowland," a visceral drama about grief, self-destruction and recovery (read our review from the Tribeca Film Festival). And the movie has quite the cast too starring Olivia Wilde, Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, plus supporting appearances by Elisabeth Moss, Ty Simpkins, John Leguizamo, Kevin Corrigan, Merritt Wever, Scott Mescudi, Mark Feuerstein and Juno Temple. In the hazy aftermath of an unimaginable loss, Sarah (Olivia Wilde) and Phil (Luke Wilson) come unhinged, recklessly ignoring the repercussions. Phil starts to lose sight of his morals as Sarah puts herself in increasingly dangerous situations, falling deeper into her own fever dream.
