Following the release of the first trailer for "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice," there was much chatter about how dark is too dark for comic book movies. And even Marvel has gone gritty with "Daredevil," a show that’s very much for adults and raises the bar on the studio’s depiction of grim violence. However, don’t look to Marvel’s playbook for a darker approach when it comes to their Cinematic Universe. During a recent chat on Reddit, Kevin Feige made it clear he wasn’t fixing what isn’t broken. Here’s a summary of what said:
There is no dark turn in the MCU. He says every year fans come up to him and ask him if this movie is when the MCU goes "dark" or takes a "dark" turn. He said while the trailers may seem ominous or have a sense of impending doom, the movies do not have that feel, and will not. He said he "Hoped people would catch on by now" – there will be no giant dark turns in the MCU where it then continues to head in that direction. The humor is in the DNA of the movies, there are no plans to change that.
Certainly, Marvel doesn’t need to tinker with a formula that has been very successful and lucrative for them, but with a half-decade more of movies to come following the same template, are they setting themselves up for making things too familiar for audiences? It should be noted that while "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" is dominating the box office, domestically it’s actually trailing the first film, which is certainly a bit surprising. And there’s also the question of whether or not every character is the right fit for a lighter touch.
