This kind of seemed a bit bogus when it hit the web yesterday, but put the words Darren Aronofsky, Anne Hathaway and Judy Garland together and watch the internet react. Anyway, word circulated that the "Black Swan" helmer was going to be directing the actress in the long-developing biopic of the Hollywood icon, with no one really bothering to double check, and as we figured, it's not true.
Darren Aronofsky himself tweeted quite simply: "judy garland story is not true" And in case you're wondering, though its not an officially verified account, soon after it went online his regular collaborator Matthew Libatique confirmed it was him. The story originated on some insider sites that, generally speaking, tend to put the cart way before the horse. Another story we took at a look that cropped up yesterday concerned two big comedy stars who were said to be attached to a movie, when in actuality, they only received the scripts to read. As for Aronofsky, he generally isn't a director to sign on to multiple projects and given he's gearing up to shoot "Noah" this summer, it seemed odd he was already throwing his name onto another big movie.
So what is going with the Judy Garland movie? Your guess is as good as ours. Last we heard about it was back in 2010, when Hathaway revealed that she hoped to start shooting on it within 2 years. So yeah, the timeline fits, and maybe Harvey Weinstein (the project is set up at The Weinstein Company) is making some calls to see who is available or interested, especially since Hathaway's vocal chops will be on full display in the upcoming "Les Miserables." He certainly knows how to strike at the right moment. So we may see movement yet, but it won't be with Darren Aronofsky.
