It has been three years since Sigur Rós dropped their last album Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust, a game changer of sorts, one that pushed their epic, brooding and expansive sound slightly to the sound for something a bit more percussive, tribal and poppy than we’ve seen from the band. Since then, it’s largely been radio silence. Frontman Jónsi has embarked on a solo career, releasing the album Go and taking a pretty colorful live show around the world, and of course, he’s recently been tapped to score Cameron Crowe‘s “We Bought A Zoo.” But it looks like he’s got back together with the band. Earlier this week, Sigur Rós emailed fans with a link that pointed to a mysterious video titled “Inni” without any other info. Well, details are still scarce but this one is getting one helluva splashy debut.
Today, Venice Days — a sidebar of the Venice Film Festival — announced “Inni” as a “surprise film event” though in keeping with the project’s secrecy, no other details were mentioned aside from the director, Vincent Morrisset. He’s the man behind the Arcade Fire doc “Miroir Noir” and has made a name with his highly original and interactive web work. Speculation has been running about what exactly “Inni” with most seeming to guess that it’s a live concert movie of some kind, but Morrisset’s involvement and the project being billed as a “film event” seems to point to something quite different. But with Venice Film Festival kicking off at the end of the month we’ll find out soon enough but see if you parse anything out of the trailer below.
Also added to the Venice Days programming is Argentinian director Fernando “Pino” Solanas‘ “Ono Negro.” The film is the second installment in the dyptich “Tierra Sublevada” following 2009’s “Oro Impuro.” Other highlights of the Venice Days slate include Jean Marc-Vallee‘s “Cafe De Flore,” Frederick Wiseman‘s “Crazy Horse” and Lou Ye‘s “Love And Bruises.” The Venice Film Festival kicks off on August 31st.
