Back in 2010, considerable buzz was generated by Daniel Espinosa's crime thriller "Snabba Cash" (also known as "Easy Money") when it premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and stormed its domestic box office. Almost immediately it gained international interest with The Weinstein Company acquiring the distribution rights and Warner Bros picking up the remake rights and wasting little time in attaching Zac Efron to the project. Espinosa cashed in on the success and landed the director's chair for "Safe House," while the film's star Joel Kinnaman snagged a small part in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" remake, nabbed part in the otherwise awful "The Darkest Hour" and also took the lead on AMC's "The Killing."
The original "Snabba Cash" will finally make its U.S. bow on July 27th (with Harvey clearly waiting until the release of "Safe House" to cash in on the director's success) and while the remake still seems a long way off, we've now got our first look at the Swedish sequel. The first film was based on a novel of the same name by Jens Lapidus and was the first in a trilogy. It told the story of JW (Kinnaman) who was enticed into the world of organized crime, whose story becomes intertwined with those of Mrado, a hitman for the Yugoslavian mafia, and Jorge, a Chilean escaped convict. Espinosa takes an executive producer credit this time around, with Babak Najafi — who won best debut film in Berlin for "Seppe" also in 2010 — at the helm.
The trailer for the sequel — which is expected to be released in Sweden later this year — has arrived and obviously contains spoilers if you don't want to know what happened in the first film. The action begins with Mrado and JW in prison together, with JW about to embark on his first unsupervised leave but things escalate when he decides he can't spend another day inside. Having not seen the first film the trailer for the sequel still looks fairly enticing — is this the Swedish "Pusher"?
