Watch: Trailer For Celine Sciamma's Acclaimed 'Girlhood'

nullAnyone writing about director Celine Sciamma’s (“Tomboy," "Water Lilies") new coming-of-age story “Girlhood” will undoubtedly compare it to last year’s American indie smash hit “Boyhood," or at least bring up the resemblance between titles. Perhaps that’s exactly what the film’s American distributor Strand Releasing wants, considering the English translation of the film’s original title “Bande de Filles” is actually “Group of Girls,” or “Gang of Girls." But Richard Linklater didn’t direct a 12-year project called “Gang of Boys,” so here we are.

The first English-language trailer for “Girlhood” lets us into the story of Marieme (Karidja Toure), who begins a new life with her three new free-spirited friends after being oppressed by her family for so long. “Girlhood” had a small but strong presence in festivals while gathering some very positive reviews. In fact, our glowing review out of Cannes described the film as "hugely uplifting" and approaching something close to "sublime."

Check out the trailer below. "Girlhood" opens on January 30th.
