Got a Tip?

Scores For Lucio Fulci’s ‘The Beyond,’ Vittorio De Sica’s ‘Terminal Station’ & ‘The Black Orchid’ Getting Reissued

nullSo, kinda bummed out by the depressing soundtrack for "The Avengers" that was unveiled yesterday? Well, these upcoming releases should make that alt-rock mess a distant memory as the scores for Lucio Fulci's "The Beyond," Vittorio De Sica's "Terminal Station" and Martin Ritt's "The Black Orchid" are all getting fresh reissues.

First up, Mondo — who are also bringing the soundtrack to "Drive" on vinyl later this year — are dipping back into early '80s horror, set to release Fabio Frizzi's score for "The Beyond." One of the famed director's biggest hits, the film starts with the murder of an artist in 1927 Louisiana, whose demise results in the seven doors of death being opened up to the living. And yeah, it gets pretty freaky from there. Frizzi was a regular collaborator with Fulci, and his work here is considered one of the best '80s horror had to offer. "The Beyond" will drop officially on May 22nd in a limited LP run of 1500 copies (500 on clear turquoise wax) but if you keep your eyes peeled online, you'll find it sooner.

Next up, Disques Cinémusique are dropping a 2-for-1 set of Alessandro Cicognini's scores for "Terminal Station" and "The Black Orchid." The first film is a bruised, woozy romance from De Sica starring a never-more-wounded Montgomery Clift and Jennifer Jones in a film about the last meeting between a married American woman and her Italian lover. The film was famously butchered by David O. Selznick for American audiences, as he brazenly cut out a third of the already brief film, but The Criterion Collection issued both cuts on the excellent DVD and it's a must watch. And certainly, Cicognini's score is one of the many highlights. As for "The Black Orchid," this writer hasn't seen it but Sophia Loren plus Anthony Quinn in a film about a widower and widow looking to start over, despite their middling kids? We're in. This will arrive on CD on April 15th complete with a 12-page booklet (remember those?)
