Can roommates navigate the challenges of college life while remaining friends? Two students clash in the new film “Roommates.” Devon finds herself facing freshman year with a sense of unsuspecting glee. Celeste comes to the experience with unwavering confidence. What starts out as a friendly arrangement soon turns problematic. Their time together unveils the complexities of shared spaces, especially in this stage of life. The upcoming Netflix comedy is directed by Chandler Levack and written by Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara Jane O’Sullivan. Levack previously helmed “Mile End Kicks” as well as “I Like Movies.” Fowlie and O’Sullivan have experience in comedy, having written for “Saturday Night Live.”
Sadie Sandler (“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”) stars as Devon, and Chloe East (“Heretic”) portrays Celeste. For Sandler, the college experience is playing out in real life. The actress is a freshman at NYU during filming. She reflected on her approach to the film during an interview with Teen Vogue. “In college, everyone’s trying to figure themselves out,” Sandler said. “If you don’t even know who you are yet, how can you have a stable relationship?”
An impressive cast joins the two leads. Billy Bryk, Sarah Sherman, Martin Herlihy, Josh Segarra, Carol Kane, Janeane Garofalo, Aidan Langford, Bella Murphy, Jaya Harper, Storm Reid, Ivy Wolk, and Bailee Madison co-star. Natasha Lyonne and Nick Kroll have also been announced for the project.
The film’s official synopsis:
When a hopeful, naive college freshman, Devon, asks the cool and confident Celeste to be her roommate, a blossoming friendship spirals into a war of passive aggression.
Judit Maull, Kevin Grady, and Jackie Shenoo serve as executive producers on “Roommates.” The film debuts on April 17 on Netflix. Get your first look at the trailer below.
