The first “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” turned Mario into a $1.3 billion global theatrical machine. Now “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is taking the obvious next step and sending the whole thing into orbit, with Illumination and Nintendo pushing their blockbuster adaptation past the Mushroom Kingdom and into a larger, more crowded cosmic sequel ahead of its April 1 theatrical release.

According to Nintendo’s official synopsis, Mario and Luigi are now living in the Mushroom Kingdom, helping Princess Peach and even trying to reform a miniaturized imprisoned Bowser, when Peach’s birthday party kicks off a galactic adventure. Along the way, the brothers meet Yoshi, head into space, and wind up trying to stop Bowser Jr.’s ambitions while saving Rosalina.
The voice cast keeps the main core intact, with Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key returning, while the sequel adds Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Rosalina, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzmán as Wart, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. That is a much broader bench than the first film had to work with, and it gives this sequel the feeling of genuine world expansion rather than a simple repeat run.
Behind the camera, the creative team has stayed largely intact as well, with returning directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel, and Brian Tyler back to compose the score. Universal’s official materials list the film opening only in theaters on April 1, 2026, which makes this new trailer the latest push for a sequel aimed at turning one of the biggest animated hits of the decade into a full-fledged franchise engine.
