'DMX: Don't Try To Understand' Trailer: A Troubled Hip Hop Legend Get His Due In New HBO Max Doc

HBO’s Music Box series is back with yet another intimate look into a famous performer’s life. “DMX: Don’t Try To Understand” follows Earl “DMX” Simmons through his last years. The artist, released from prison in 2019, was in the midst of resuming his successful music career when tragedy struck earlier this year. What remains is the poignant and revealing view of what the man meant to his family, friends, and supporters.

Don’t Try To Understand’ hails from filmmakers Christopher Frierson and Clark Slater.  Both directors are well versed in the subgenre dedicated to musical figures. Frierson worked on 2017’s Elvis Presley documentary “The King,” Slater comes to the project after directing several music-centric films, including the documentary shorts “Too Old to Die Young.” Those non-fiction titles focused on Ice-T, Russell Simmons, and music journalist Bill Adler.

The documentary’s official synopsis:

HBO’s “DMX: Don’t Try To Understand,” part of the Music Box series, directed by Christopher Frierson and executive produced by The Ringer’s Bill Simmons (HBO’s “Andre The Giant,” “Showbiz Kids”), focuses on a year in the life of rapper Earl “DMX” Simmons as he is released from prison in early 2019 and attempts to rebuild his career in the music industry and reconnect with family and fans. Unfolding in cinéma vérité style and with unfettered access, the film bears witness to a man searching for reinvention and redemption, striving to stay true to himself while reestablishing his roles as a father, an artist, and an icon.
