'Radium Girls' Trailer: Joey King & Abby Quinn Fight Against Factory Worker Injustice

The devil is often in the details when it comes to society’s most tragic cases. For a group of young women in the 1920s, that demon was none other than a seemingly harmless ingredient. In a time where war was ever-present and a woman’s drive to succeed often quenched beneath the usual ideals, these young women fought to work at a factory and instead faced death itself. “Radium Girls” tells the true story of these brave women who fought their bosses as well as the government to prove workers across the country mattered.

Joey King comes to the project after her critically acclaimed performance in “The Act.” The other part of this on-screen sister act, Abby Quinn, showed her potential for leading roles with “Landline” and has another chance to shine with this role. Behind the scenes, filmmaker Ginny Mohler and Academy Award-nominated producer Lydia Dean Pilcher team up to direct; for Pilcher, this is a first in a career that has included credits on “Darjeeling Limited” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley” Mohler also co-wrote the film with Brittany Shaw. Emily McEvoy is a producer on the film along with executive producers Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner, Harriet Newman Leve, Jayne Baron Sherman, and Willette Klausner

Based on true events set in 1928, in New Jersey, teenage sisters, Bessie and Jo, dream of faraway places as the paint glow-in-the-dark watch dials at the American Radium Factory. When Jo loses a tooth, Bessie’s world turns upside down as the mystery of Jo’s disease slowly unravels. Bessie befriends two young activists and in a radical coming of age, she exposes a corporate scandal. Bessie and the “Radium Girls” file a lawsuit against American Radium. This notorious case ultimately led to a lasting impact in the area of workplace health and safety as well as the study of radioactivity.
