Can familial connections survive past wounds and present-day dilemmas? Joachim Trier tells the story of two generations plagued by difficulties in “Sentimental Value.” The film follows the sisters’ intent to repair broken relationships with an emotionally detached father. They soon discover the filmmaking patriarch is bent on making his big comeback, with or without their involvement. Trier’s follow-up to the critically acclaimed “The Worst Person in the World” has already collected major accolades. Trier’s film premiered during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, winning the prestigious Grand Prix.

Much of the “Sentimental Value” critical praise extends to the project’s outstanding performances. Stellan Skarsgård shows why his work enthralls audiences, while Renate Reinsve steals every scene again. The Playlist’s Gregory Ellwood noted the cinematic pairing of Reinsve and Trier seems to “bring out the best in each other creatively.” Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning round out the cast.

Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father — and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
