“Idiots” starts with a rehab transport job and the wrong men for it. Macon Blair’s Sundance comedy, which premiered under the title “The Shitheads,” stars Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. as two hired escorts tasked with getting a wealthy teenager to treatment. It opens on August 28 from the Independent Film Company.
Blair, the filmmaker behind “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” wrote and directed the film, which follows two rock-bottom screwups whose simple job starts unraveling on the road. Mason Thames, Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun, and Peter Dinklage round out the main cast.
The Playlist’s Sundance review already got at what makes the movie work, calling it “always entertaining” and pointing to Blair’s “artistic sympathy for the outcasts.” That carries over nicely into the teaser. Under the grime and bad decisions, the movie is still selling a ragged kind of affection for people who keep making the wrong call.
The teaser arrives a few months after the Sundance premiere and shortly after the title change from “The Shitheads” to “Idiots,” but the setup stays the same: two men in over their heads, a rich troubled teenager in the back seat, and a rehab run headed further off course by the mile. The new title may be cleaner, but the pitch is still pure road-comedy chaos.
