A case of mistaken identity, two codependent best friends, and the promise of total chaos — Neon has finally put a date on “Wrong Girls,” the new stoner comedy starring Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat, setting the film for theaters on August 14, 2026. Conveniently teased on 4/20, the stoner holiday of all holidays, the comedy is written and directed by Dylan Meyer (“XOXO, and “Moxie,” and also it should be noted, Stewart’s spouse), the film follows two broke best friends whose lives spiral after a mix-up throws them into chaos.
The teaser itself keeps the pitch loose and knowingly dumb. Set in a kitchen, Stewart and Shawkat pretend to be stoned, fumbling around as they try to remember what exactly they are supposed to be teasing in the first place. The joke is that there is no major reveal beyond the release date — after spacing out for a beat, they finally remember the point of the whole exercise: their movie opens August 14. It is a small, deadpan bit, but one that sells the film’s scruffy comic energy better than a more conventional montage probably could.
That teaser also fits the setup. “Wrong Girls” is clearly aiming for a shaggy, offbeat stoner-comedy vibe, but the ensemble gives it a broader shape than the two-person kitchen gag initially suggests. Alongside Stewart and Shawkat, the cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, Kate McKinnon, with Tony Hale and Geena Davis also on board.
For Stewart, the project lands in a space she has been circling for a while, and Meyer’s feature directorial debut sounds committed to that loose, oddball chemistry rather than cleaning it up. Neon, meanwhile, is selling the movie with the lightest possible touch: two best friends, one fried promotional bit, and one release date. “Wrong Girls” opens only in theaters on August 14, 2026.
