For a few brutal decades, Hell’s Kitchen was not just a New York neighborhood—it was a battleground. MGM+ is heading back to that era with “The Westies,” a new crime drama about the violent Irish gang that operated on the West Side of Manhattan. At the same time, the Italian Mafia still held enormous power across the city.
The streamer has released the teaser for the series, which premieres this summer and centers on the gang during the early 1980s, as the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center threatens to turn the Westies’ Hell’s Kitchen turf into a major financial prize. The promise of that windfall puts the gang in a tense arrangement with the Five Families, even as the Westies remain badly outnumbered.
The official synopsis says the group’s “legendary brutality and cunning” have given them enough leverage to share in the spoils through a fragile détente. But the series also tracks a generational fight inside the organization, with younger members pushing against old-school leadership as the FBI deepens its investigation into the Italian Mafia.
The cast includes J.K. Simmons, Titus Welliver, Tom Brittney, Stanley Morgan, Sarah Bolger, Jessica Frances Dukes, Hamish Allan-Headley, Vincent Walsh, Allen Leech, and Hilary McCormack. Chris Brancato and Michael Panes co-created the series and serve as executive producers.
For MGM+, “The Westies” fits neatly into the premium-cable crime lane: a period New York gangster story built around turf, money, loyalty, and the kind of internal pressure that tends to bring criminal empires down from within. And with Simmons and Welliver anchoring the ensemble, the series has the kind of hard-edged presence this material needs.
