The first trailer for “Mint” has arrived, and it gives Charlotte Regan, the filmmaker behind “Scrapper,” a sharp left turn into crime, romance, and family collapse. The eight-part BBC drama stars Emma Laird, best known for “Mayor of Kingstown,” opposite Ben Coyle-Larner—better known as Loyle Carner—in his first acting role, with the series marking Regan’s television debut after her Sundance-winning breakout feature.

The setup is clean and volatile. Laird plays Shannon, the daughter of a dominant crime family, while Coyle-Larner plays Arran, a member of a rival clan who returns to town from London. Their relationship sits at the center of the series, with the official synopsis describing “Mint” as a story of “soaring romance, crushing heartbreak, and what love might feel like when everyone outside of your family is terrified of you.” All eight episodes hit BBC iPlayer on April 20, with the first two airing on BBC One at 9 p.m. that night.
That Romeo-and-Juliet framework is already out in the open. The Guardian describes the series as a story of impossible love between two people from bitterly opposed crime families. At the same time, Regan told the paper she remains drawn to working-class characters and to putting them in worlds she has not seen before. That tracks with what the trailer has sold so far: a heightened romantic pull set against a harsher criminal landscape, with Regan leaning on image and atmosphere as much as plot mechanics.
The supporting cast backs that up with some real weight. Sam Riley plays Shannon’s father, Dylan, while Laura Fraser, Lindsay Duncan, and Lewis Gribben round out the ensemble. TechRadar reports that Dylan steps down as head of the family for mysterious reasons, adding another fault line around Shannon and Arran’s relationship. Between Regan’s visual instincts, Laird’s rising profile, and Carner stepping into a full dramatic lead, “Mint” already looks like one of the BBC’s more interesting spring swings.
