Caught up in the world of long-form cinematic television, Nicolas Winding Refn hasn’t released a feature film since “The Neon Demon” in 2016, but the Danish provocateur is finally back in theaters this summer. After premiering out of competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, “Her Private Hell” now has a new trailer ahead of its July theatrical release.
The film is written by Nicolas Winding Refn and Esti Giordani, from a story by Refn, who also produces. Sophie Thatcher leads the cast, joined by Charles Melton, Havana Rose Liu, Kristine Froseth, Shioli Kutsuna, Aoi Yamada, Dougray Scott, Diego Calva, and Hidetoshi Nishijima.
Here’s the official synopsis:
When a mysterious mist engulfs a futuristic metropolis, unleashing a deadly and elusive entity, a troubled young woman searches for her father. Her quest collides with an American GI on a harrowing odyssey to rescue his daughter from hell.
The Playlist caught “Her Private Hell” at Cannes earlier this year, calling the film “a neon-soaked sci-fi nightmare” that had good and bad connotations. Still, for Refn devotees, a new feature from the “Drive,” “Only God Forgives,” and “The Neon Demon” filmmaker is always going to be an event, especially when it involves haunted futurism, missing fathers, private nightmares, and Charles Melton descending into hell.
“Her Private Hell” opens only in theaters on July 24. Watch the trailer below.
