Mattel Studios brought another familiar toy brand to San Diego Comic-Con, unveiling the trailer for “Matchbox,” a globe-trotting action comedy from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Films. Rather than simply placing its die-cast cars at the center of the story, the movie uses them as the foundation for a sprawling international adventure led by John Cena.
53 Must-See Films To Watch In Summer 2026
Directed by Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s “Extraction” movies, “Matchbox” follows Sean, an undercover CIA agent who unexpectedly returns to the small town and childhood friends he left behind years earlier. The reunion quickly spirals out of control when Sean inadvertently pulls his old crew into a frantic international pursuit to save the world.
Cena leads an ensemble cast that includes Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp.
The film was written by David Coggeshall, whose credits include “The Family Plan” and “Orphan: First Kill.” Hargrave also serves as an executive producer alongside Patrick Newall and Elizabeth Bassin.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger produce through Skydance Media, alongside Robbie Brenner and Ynon Kreiz through Mattel Films and Jules Daly.
“Matchbox” premieres October 9, 2026, on Apple TV. Watch the first trailer below.
