Getaway just got a whole new meaning in “The Devil’s Mouth,” a Prime Video survival thriller that puts Jeff Wadlow back in the high-concept genre lane he has worked in for much of his career.
Wadlow has been a reliable hand for studio-friendly genre fare for years, moving from the teen slasher “Cry Wolf” and MMA drama “Never Back Down” to the comic-book sequel “Kick-Ass 2” and a run of PG-13 horror films including “Truth or Dare,” “Fantasy Island,” and “Imaginary.” “The Devil’s Mouth” keeps him in that commercial horror-thriller zone, this time trading cursed games and haunted toys for a cave system, rising panic, and something deadly moving under the water.

The film follows five friends who head to Thailand for one last adventure before life in the real world begins. Their destination is The Devil’s Mouth cave system, but the trip quickly becomes an underwater nightmare when they discover something hunting them in the dark. Fast, silent, and deadly, the threat turns the cave into a trap, where panic spreads, trust breaks down, and every wrong turn becomes a fight to survive.
There is also some pedigree behind the project. The film began life as “Apex,” a script by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner that appeared on the 2019 Black List before eventually becoming “The Devil’s Mouth.” Thunder Road Films producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, best known for backing the “John Wick” franchise, produce alongside Wadlow, with Amazon MGM Studios distributing the film through Prime Video.
The cast is pitched directly at the YA/thriller sweet spot. Kathryn Newton, who has moved between studio horror, comedy, and franchise fare in “Freaky,” “Lisa Frankenstein,” “Abigail,” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” stars alongside Lana Condor, still best known to many viewers from Netflix’s “To All the Boys” films. They are joined by Nico Hiraga, Gavin Casalegno, Tommi Rose, and Tayme Thapthimthong.
