So, is so Mark Strong going to play Sinestro in Martin Campbell’s adaptation of D.C. Comics “Green Lantern”?
His name has been obviously been connected to the role for weeks now and apparently he’s been “confirmed” by regular “Green Lantern” comics writer Geoff Johns.
We would be skeptical, but “Green Lantern” is shooting in New Orleans in March and Johns was recently in the city presumably to drop by the pre-production.
‘Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro,” he wrote on Twitter (via /Film).
He also confirmed the appearance of other alien Green Lanterns from the comic books including the beloved Kilowog character. “Kilowog, the Guardians, Oa…all breathtaking. The age of Green Lantern is upon us!!”
It will be interesting to see how they convincingly pull of characters like him and the Oans, but it shouldn’t take more than the special effects already displayed in the “Hellboy” series (and hopefully will be cheaper than those in “Lord Of the Rings”).
As previously noted, Sinestro will likely not to be the villain of “Green Lantern” and instead he’ll be seen as a mentor, setting him up as a villain in the inevitable “Green Lantern” sequel, but Strong is a great actor and a great choice. Instead, Peter Sarsgaard will play the film’s main villain, Dr. Hector Hammond and Blake Lively will play the love interest. Tim Robbins will play Sarsgaard’s father, Senator Hammond.
“Green Lantern” won’t hit theaters until June 17, 2011.
