Cate Blanchett Says She’s Working With Brady Corbet Next, Joining His Mysterious ‘Origin Of The World’ Drama With Michael Fassbender

Blanchett’s apparent reveal follows Michael Fassbender’s reported negotiations for Corbet’s next film, a sprawling project linked to American mysticism, the occult, and Selena Gomez.

Coming off “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet does not seem to be thinking smaller. His still-mysterious follow-up keeps collecting the kind of names that make it one of the more intriguing post-Oscar auteur projects in motion.

During a Cannes appearance, Cate Blanchett reportedly said she is working with Corbet next, suggesting the two-time Oscar winner is joining the filmmaker’s enormous, occult-tinged American epic. As with most of the reporting around the project so far, a little caution is still required: there has been no formal studio announcement, Blanchett’s role has not been revealed, and the film’s title, distributor, production timeline, and release plan remain under wraps. But Blanchett’s comment is a major tell, especially coming just after the trades reported that Michael Fassbender is in negotiations to join Corbet’s next film.

The project is rumored to be titled “The Origin of the World,” though that title has not been officially confirmed. Selena Gomez has also been linked to the film, and Corbet has already described the new movie in terms that suggest another huge, formally ambitious undertaking rather than a modest comedown after “The Brutalist.”

Speaking at Storyhouse in Dublin earlier this year, Corbet said his new film is “sort of about American mysticism and the history of the occult in America,” adding that he had been reading extensively about “the migration of the cultist belief systems and structures.” He also said he had started working with occult historian Mitch Horowitz.

Corbet has suggested the scale has not shrunk either. He previously said the new film was built around a 200-page script and a planned 50-day shoot, describing the production as “basically two, 25-day shoots for 100 pages.” That does not confirm a final runtime, but it does point to another dense, large-canvas work from a filmmaker who has little interest in retreating into something tidy.

Blanchett’s involvement would fit the terrain. She has spent much of her career moving between prestige auteurs, studio work, and stranger, harder-to-classify projects, and she recently starred opposite Fassbender in Steven Soderbergh’s 2025 spy drama “Black Bag.”

For now, Corbet’s next film remains officially under wraps, with no distributor, production start, or release date confirmed. But with Blanchett now apparently saying she is working with him next, and Fassbender already in talks, the filmmaker’s post-“The Brutalist” project is quickly becoming one of the more intriguing actor-driven packages in development.
