Just months after confirming that a second season of “Hawkeye” was in development — and that he had passed on it due to what he described as an unsatisfactory financial offer — Jeremy Renner now says the project might not be dead after all. The actor sounded newly optimistic about returning to the Marvel series that reintroduced Clint Barton as one of the MCU’s most grounded heroes.
Speaking on The Playlisy’s Bingeworthy podcast while promoting the fourth season of his Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown,” Renner revealed that discussions around “Hawkeye” Season 2 are ongoing, and that he feels confident about making it happen now that he’s fully recovered from his near-fatal snowplow accident and ‘Kingstown’ is headed into its fourth season.
“We got to where we’re trying to do the second season,” Renner said. “And I think I’ll get strong enough to be able to do it. And we’ll work it out. It’s gonna be great.”
Renner also reflected on what made the first season of “Hawkeye” such a personal experience — both for him and for audiences. “I really enjoyed doing the series version,” he said. “Because it was a bit more intimate and had the family dynamic, which is always a huge part of him. I think Clint’s superpower is the human side — he’s a superpowerless superhero. He’s one of the few, but I think his superpower is that sort of grit of the human condition and his loyalty and family. It’s like, otherwise, what are you fighting for? We’re fighting for that love and that loyalty of family. And so exploring that was always great. And then there’s the Christmas theme — being in New York, that was great too.”
“Hawkeye,” which debuted on Disney+ in late 2021, was one of the MCU’s more warmly received small-screen outings, blending grounded action with an offbeat sense of humor and emotional texture. The series paired Renner’s weary, world-worn Clint Barton with Hailee Steinfeld’s energetic Kate Bishop, creating a holiday-set mentorship story that leaned more on vulnerability than spectacle (read our review).
While Marvel has yet to officially announce a second season, Renner’s latest comments suggest that the studio and its star are still working out a path forward and continuing to refine the story. For now, he seems eager to pick up the bow again — it’s hopefully just a matter of timing, a strong script and the right deal.
