‘Shrek 5′ Trailer: DreamWorks’ Animated Fairytale Franchise Returns Next Summer As The Shrek Family Expands

We’re staring down the barrel of a fifth installment in the “Shrek” franchise (based on the work of author William Steig and debuted back in 2001), which helped launch DreamWorks Animation as a direct competitor to Walt Disney Animation and Pixar, proving that other studios can make wildly popular projects without the help of Disney and that the house of mouse doesn’t have a monopoly on the studio animation medium. “Shrek 5” won’t be hitting theaters until a little over a year from now, with a release date of June 30, 2027, but some footage has made its way to us to help tide fans over until then.

Universal Pictures has dropped a trailer for the animated flick, which features Shrek and Fiona’s trio of kids. This new installment sees Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz return to their signature roles.

Meanwhile, Emmy-winning superstar Zendaya (“The Odyssey,” “Dune” trilogy) joins the cast as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter Felicia, along with Marcello Hernandez (“Saturday Night Live,” “Happy Gilmore 2”) and Skyler Gisondo (“Superman,” “Booksmart”) as Felicia’s brothers, Fergus and Farkle. The directing team includes franchise veterans Conrad Vernon (“Shrek 2,” “Monsters vs. Aliens”) and Walt Dohrn (“Trolls,” “Trolls World Tour & Trolls Band Together”) alongside co-director Brad Ableson (“Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “The Simpsons”).
