Ben Stiller’s epic war comedy “Tropic Thunder,” is right around the corner, so it make sense the soundtrack is coming out around the same time.
Due August 5 via Lakeshore records, the soundtrack features war-centric Vietnam-friendly cuts by well, Edwin Starr, Steppenwolf, Ten Years After, CCR, The Temptations and New York rock act the Mooney Suzuki who make a cameo in the film as a house band that cover a few counter culture classics (Rare Earth’s “I Just Want To Celebrate” and apparently Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” in the film, but not the disc). It’s not the first film foray for the Suzuki who also composed, as well as provided backing music, for the songs performed by Jack Black and the kids in Richard Linklater’s “School of Rock.”
“It was amazing [time] because fake Vietnam is Hawaii. So we had the best fucking time. It was awesome. We had a free Hawaiian vacation and played a band at the party so we just had a party for three days,” the band told Suicide Girls website of shooting the film.
Newer cuts presumably used in the goofball and zany Stiller way include songs by The Crystal Method, MC Hammer, and poofy new-age trip-hop band Enigma.
One song “I Love That Pussy,” is even sung by castmate Bradon T. Jackson (the actual African American solider having trouble swallowing Robert Downey Jr.’s take on the black man). “Tropic Thunder” opens up in theaters August 15. Btw, the score disc, composed by Teddy Shapiro, also comes out on August 5.
