Got a Tip?

Harold Ramis Confirms ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Will Focus On Younger Ghosbusting Generation; But Original Cast Will Appear As Mentors

To those of you think the idea of a third “Ghostbusters” film with a new, younger generation is a vile, sitcom-like concept, you might want to forget this now. To devout enthusiasts who just want to see the original Ghostbusters on screen no matter what, prepare to get happy.

There’s been rumors for some time now that “Ghostbusters 3” would follow a younger cast, including Seth Rogen, Steve Carrell and members of the Judd Apatow troupe, and in an interview with MTV, Harold Ramis — who played the eggheaded scientist Dr. Egon Spengler in the original films — confirmed that some of this is true.

“We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said, promising the original cast of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd would return. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”

As for the rumors who might play that younger cast, the actor/director says the script — written by “The Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky who have also penned Ramis upcoming directorial effort, “Year One,” — isn’t even complete. He also noted that no one is going to sign on to star in a threequel that could ruin a classic series [ed. though “Ghostbusters 2” kind of did that already as it’s pretty mediocre].

“Someone asked Seth Rogen [about appearing in ‘Ghostbusters 3’, and he said, ‘What?’ ” Ramis recalled. “He said, ‘That’d have to be one great fucking script for anyone to touch that.’ He’s right about that.”

MTV says that Judd Apatow is producing the third “Ghostbusters” film, but actually this is incorrect and has already been debunked by Columbia chief Doug Belgrad. Maybe they missed that story. When Production Weekly broke that rumor originally, we questioned it and so they sent us their production docs. We then called the ‘G3’ production offices shortly after Belgrad had denied Apatow’s involvement and we got the same, “nope, sorry [Apatow’s not involved,” response. Just fyi.
