Everyone loves the Oscar “In Memoriam” section of the evening where a clip reel is shown of all the actors, filmmakers and talent that have died in the last year, right? In provides a lot of sighs, “I didn’t know he died!” exclamations and teary, “man, she was the best,” proclamations.
But Oscar is switching it up this year, right? All of it is fresh and new and exciting? Well, yikes, this year, the Academy “in memoriam” section is going to be accompanied by a Queen Latifah sing-along. Weird, right?
According to E!, the rapper turned actress will sing “I’ll Be Seeing You,” a popular Broadway song that has a lot of Hollywood history too. It was featured throughout the eponymous 1944 movie starring Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotten, plus the song became associated with Liberace, as the theme to his ’50s television show (it was also used in Woody Allen’s “Crimes and Misdemeanors,” “Misery” and “The Notebook”).
Singing during the death montage? Mmm, we’re not feeling it at all. Isn’t it meant to be a more solemn moment in the show? Well, at least Oscar is living up to its promise to shake things up.
