“Joy Division,” the plainly titled Grant Gee documentary on the short-lived ’70s post-punk band was picked up by the Weinstein Company during the just-wrapped Toronto International Film Festival. Speculation is that “Joy Division” will be bundled together with the JD movie, “Control,” directed by Anton Corbijn for the eventual DVD release. Maybe they’ll even screen together in October? As you’ve likely heard by now, David Cronenberg’s new, how do I make violence that more shocking film, “Eastern Promises” won the sort-of prestigious Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. The American Press like to call it the “Top Prize,” but in reality it’s sort of the “Only Prize.” Canadians are too nice to judge you, they don’t want their film festivals with juries and competition. Instead, they let audiences stuff ballots and whatever sucker gets the most votes wins. Oh, and Canadian director finally coming into his own internationally, commercially and critically gets the prize at a Canadian film festival? SHOCKA!
David Gordon Green’s (“All The Real Girls”) long-time musical collaborator David Wingo (aka Ola Podrida, the band that beat Interpol to their album cover) has composed the soundtrack to the new “American Idol”-like spoof film, “Great World of Sound.” Like some of the music found on on Green’s forthcoming, “Snow Angels,” ‘Sound’ tends to skew toward the dreamy electronic side of Wingo’s beautiful and pensive acoustic scores.
