After premiering at Sundance earlier this year, Vertical has a trailer for “The Weight” ready for audiences, a Depression-era historical drama starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe.
Directed by Padraic McKinley, making his feature directorial debut, “The Weight” is set in Oregon in 1933 and follows Samuel Murphy, a father torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal work camp. His only apparent way out comes through Warden Clancy, who tempts him with early release if he can smuggle gold through the dangerous wilderness. But the journey quickly turns perilous as betrayal spreads within the crew, forcing Murphy to question how far he’ll go to see his child again.
The film also stars Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, and Sam Hazeldine. Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines pen the screenplay from a story by Matthew Booi, Leo Scherman, and Chapman. Producers on “The Weight” include Ryan Hawke, Simon Fields, Nathan Fields, Jonas Katzenstein, and Maximilian Leo.
The Playlist’s review of “The Weight” out of Sundance called the film a “rugged” survivalist western and singled out Hawke’s performance, noting that he brings a grounding force to the film’s harsh, elemental, albeit merely serviceable, story.
“The Weight” opens in theaters on September 18, 2026. Watch the new trailer for the film below.
