Ok, the Vanity Fair Movies Rock issue was well-excecuted and a good idea (gee, wonder where they got that from?) But the concert? Man, that that was an affront to anyone who’s ever composed a song for a movie.
The two-hour special on CBS (two hours??) aired Friday night and “celebrated every dimension of music’s leading role in moviemaking, from singing starlets to scene-stealing rappers, to directors whose indelible musical tastes redefine the way we listen to music and watch films.” Christ almighty.
The list of A-list halfwits that butchered movie soundtrack classics, seemingly curated by the aunt that knits you sweaters for Christmas included Beyoncé (“Over the Rainbow” from the “Wizard of Oz”), Carrie Underwood, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, Sir Elton John, Eve, Fergie, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, John Williams, LL Cool J, LeAnn Rimes, Marc Anthony, Mary J. Blige, Nicole Scherzinger, Queen Latifah, Tony Bennett and Usher (“Singing In The Rain”) and will.i.am. Basically every one your grandmother loves, ask her, she’ll probably tell you the show was extremely edgy.
Presenters included Billy Bob Thornton, Charlize Theron, Cuba Gooding Jr., Danny DeVito, Emily Deschanel, Forrest Whittaker, Harrison Ford, Jenna Fischer, Jennifer Lopez, John C. Reilly, Josh Duhamel, Kate Hudson, Matthew Broderick, Quentin Tarantino, Rita Moreno, Shirley MacLaine and Tim Robbins. The gift bags must have been stocked to the tits (what no hologram presentation by Jimmy Stewart?)
