Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema announced new casting for “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” on Tuesday at CinemaCon, with Jamie Dornan set to play Aragorn, while Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace (who played Legolas’ father Thranduil in “The Hobbit” trilogy) are also returning. The additions give the next Middle-earth film its clearest cast shape yet, with Dornan stepping into one of the saga’s central roles as the project moves deeper into its rollout.
The film is directed by Andy Serkis, who also returns as Gollum. The screenplay is by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, with Peter Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens producing. Public story details remain limited, but the current package now includes Serkis’ return, Dornan as Aragorn, and McKellen and Wood reprising their earlier roles in the series.
The Aragorn casting also clarifies an earlier swirl of speculation around the role. Earlier reports said the part would be recast and pointed to online rumors linking Leo Woodall to Aragorn, so the broad shape of the casting chatter was not entirely off, even if Dornan is the actor now confirmed for the role.
With Dornan now public as Aragorn and McKellen and Wood back in the fold, the film’s cast has moved into clearer view ahead of release. “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” opens in theaters on December 17, 2027.
