There’s a little bit of unfinished business hovering over Bassam Tariq and Mahershala Ali working together. Tariq, the filmmaker behind “Mogul Mowgli” and the Netflix short “Ghosts of Sugar Land,” was once set to direct Ali in Marvel’s long-gestating “Blade” reboot before exiting the project in 2022. That movie has since become one of the MCU’s more famously stalled projects, but Tariq and Ali have finally found their collaboration elsewhere: “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.”
From Amazon MGM Studios, and Orion Pictures, the film stars Ali as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman struggling to reconcile his violent work with faith and fatherhood. When his wife dies, Latif is forced into a desperate journey across Houston to protect his children, even as dangerous forces close in around him and his own beliefs begin to fracture.
The film is being billed as a genre-bending action drama, and Ali’s presence alone makes that intriguing. A two-time Oscar winner whose screen work often radiates restraint, gravity, and inner conflict, Ali plays a hitman whose moral code is collapsing under pressure, feels like rich terrain—especially with Tariq, a filmmaker whose work has often explored identity, faith, family, and the complexities of Muslim life.
The supporting cast is strong, too, with John Cho, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Giancarlo Esposito, and Adia co-starring. Tariq wrote and directed the film and produced alongside Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari. Two & Two Pictures is also behind the film.
“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 25, expands on October 2, and goes wide on October 9. Watch the first teaser for the film below.
