First Teaser Trailer For Bruno Dumont's 'Lil Quinquin' Sequel 'Coincoin And The Extra-Humans'

Before the scarring “is it TV, is it a film?” wars of 2017 that centered around David Lynch’sTwin Peaks The Return” (which celebrated its one year anniversary yesterday), there was the ” Li’l Quinquin” debate of 2014, albeit on a much smaller scale. The French murder mystery film/miniseries by provocateur Bruno Dumont blurred the lines perhaps more so than Lynch’s effort. “Li’l Quinquin” (or “P’tit Quinquin” as it’s known in France) played at the Cannes Film Festival as a 3 and a half hour film but was presented on French TV as a little mini-series. Furthermore, Dumont made it for television and shot in aspect ratio for television sets, but Cannes organizers, who get snooty with TV sometimes, made the exception for Dumont (much like they did with “Twin Peaks”).

This is all of a longwinded way to say “Li’l Quinquin” is back. In early 2017 it was announced that Dumont was going back to one of his most popular works for a second season, but this time called. “Coincoin And The Extra-Humans.” And it looks like it’s not far off as the first trailer has arrived.

“Coincoin And The Extra-humans,” revisits the life of the now-grown-up social misfit Quinquin (Alane Delhaye) who now goes by the nickname of CoinCoin. The hilarious bumbling cops of the original series, Van Der Weyden (Bernard Pruvost) and his partner Carpentier (Philippe Jore). This season, as you’ll see by the trailer, feature supernatural and sci-fi elements, some qualities of which were hinted at in the end of season one.

Here’s the synopsis:

When a strange magma is found near CoinCoin’s home town, the inhabitants suddenly start to behave strangely. Goofy detective Captain Van Der Weyden and his loyal assistant Carpentier set about investigating these alien attacks, discovering that an extra-terrestrial invasion has begun.

It definitely looks bizarre, but we’re excited its back. “Li’l Quinquin” the original series or film centered on the titular character, then a young rapscallion always getting into trouble in a rural seaside town in France. Simultaneously, the French policemen, are out of their depth when they have to investigate some mysterious and grizzly murders.

Dumont’s show film was a fascinating mix of deadpan comedy, murder mystery and existential drama that went from hilarious to quite somber and chilling over the course of its 3.5 hours. Personally, I placed it high up in my Top 10 list of 2015 (when it was released Stateside). France’s prestigious and notoriously snooty Cahier Du Cinema journalists also put it at the top of their Best of list in 2014. Here’s the first trailer for “Coincoin And The Extra-Humans.”
