Circle Of Life: Moore Influences Borat Influences Moore

Portly muckracker Michael Moore claims his gonzo comedian buddy Borat (aka Sascha Baron Cohen) helped him grow the brass balls to sail into Guantanamo Bay.

The two had met at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival where ‘Borat: Cultural Learnings’ had its premiere and once there, Cohen confessed to Moore that his dogged pursuit of jackass corporate overlords in his early documentaries had inspired him (when the ‘Borat’ reel actually broke down during its Toronto premiere, it was Moore who got onstage to entertain the restless crowd until the film was fixed).

Borat’s aggressive pursuit and relentless committment to making audiences feel uncomfortable in turn influenced Moore.

When Cohen related his admission, Moore shot back, “But I’ve never done anything like wrestle naked with another guy on the floor of an insurance-brokers or mortgage-brokers convention.”

But after watching the film and hearing Cohen’s inspired remarks, Moore knew what had to be done. “If [Cohen] says I was an inspiration for those things, I now have to up the ante. So we sailed into the mined waters of Guantanamo Bay with sick 9/11 workers and a bullhorn” (and Moore is currently being investigated by the U.S. government for going to the trouble).
