Gina Carano's 'Mandalorian' Character May *Not* Be Recast; Actress Was Warned About Social Media Controversies Several Times

The ongoing fallout of the Gina Carano story continues. Fired from “The Mandalorian” series by Lucasfilm — following months of problematic social media posts and a controversial, straw-that-broke-the-camels-back post that many viewed as anti-Semitic — THR has an interesting behind the scenes look at her dismissal from the hit series, following the news that she learned of her firing through social media.

As already reported, Lucasfilm had been monitoring the blowback of her controversial social media posts—many of them transphobic, anti-mask, pro-Vaxx, pro-Insurrection, and pro-fraudulent-election conspiracy theories—for months. Yesterday, in an interview with conservative pundit Bari Weiss—she quit the New York Times because she claims she was bullied for her conservative views—Carano asserts that she was warned only once about her social media posts and turned down an apology suggestion they wrote in favor of her own (though she never posted any mea culpa).

But the Hollywood Reporter’s behind-the-scenes look at her firing, says the actress was warned many times by Lucasfilm and refused to listen. The actress, as you can imagine, “had repeatedly been warned by those around her about her social media behavior.” The trade also even reminds us of a good point: Carano herself already publicly admitted she and ‘Mandalorian’ co-star Pedro Pascal had conversations about pronoun usage—which she initially mocked— (Pascal has a trans sibling), and he had “educated” her about the usage after a social media dust-up. So clearly, this is a conversation she had even with co-workers and friends, but she continued to persist. “She knew it was going to alarm people,” one source told the trade. “Why would you put [series creator Jon] Favreau in that position?”

Worse, while many have speculated that Carano’s Cara Dune Rebel Shocktrooper character would simply be rewritten out of the show, THR says they may simply find a new actress for the role (“Insiders say…expect that the character will be recast down the road, for both story and merchandising reasons”). Update: Lucasfilm is apparently refuting this claim (“A source at Lucasfilm says that a recasting is not expected”).

The trade also reiterates their previous story: A spin-off show which Carano would lead or feature in as Cara Dune, was in the works and was meant to be unveiled at big December Disney’s Investor’s Day. But her outburst of posts promoting election fraud theories in November, made Lucasfilm decide to squash that plan (if you were about to get your own show, would you play with that kind of fire after being warned by your company?).

“She was originally in that presentation when they announced all those things, and they pulled her off of it,” a source told the trade. Carano was even negotiating higher pay deals going forward for her own show and potentially appearances in a series titled, “Rangers of the New Republic,” but that’s all in the past now.

One PR rep puts the entire thing in context and not so much about politics for Disney as it is wanting to avoid controversy as a family-friendly corporation. “[They are] a corporate entity, they want to stay as trouble-free as possible.”

Carano has a new deal over at the Daily Wire, but it is a far cry from Disney, Lucasfilm, and the planet’s biggest hit show.  Disney is also obviously looking to position itself as an inclusive environment, both behind and in front of the camera, and hateful, exclusionary, mocking comments about marginalized groups just aren’t going to go over well. And lastly, as Carano’s career could be a cautionary tale, when your bosses have certain policies and want you to abide by them (and they’re not unethical, dubious, or illegal) —the Daily Wire will have some of those too, FYI—when you’re warned to adhere to them, it might be best actually to do that.
