Scott Z. Burns Is Also A Creative Exec On The ‘Dune’ HBO Max Spin-Off Series

This week, the trades revealed that Diane Ademu-John (a producer on “The Haunting of Bly Manor”) had come abord “Dune: The Sisterhood,HBO Max’s “Dune” spin-off series. Taking over from the previous showrunner Jon Spaihts— who left in late 2019 to focus on writing the script for the second of the “Dune” reboot films (yes, it’s supposed to be a two-partner— Ademu-John was reported to be the writer, showrunner, and executive producer of the series.

One problem. Even by her own admission, Ademu-John is not the sole showrunner and filmmaker/writer Scott Z. Burns is also on board the show as a co-showrunner, writer and executive producer. “Hey, Variety! This article does not mention my amazing partner in crime: Scott Z. Burns!” Ademu-John wrote on Twitter yesterday.

And yes, we’ve confirmed that Burns is working on that show in a co-creative capacity.  Why Burns wasn’t announced, given he’s the much more known of the two, is unknown, but regardless, fans should be happy with the creative team behind this series.

It is unclear when the series will air since it was announced in 2019 but presumably delayed given the showrunner change. “Dune: The Sisterhood” will serve as a prequel to the films and is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weaves through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.

Diane Ademu-John has been a writer and producer on “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Empire,” “The Originals,” and more. Scott is primarily known for his feature-film writing work— “The Bourne Ultimatum,” several films with Steven Soderbergh like “The Informant!” and “Contagion,” his directorial effort “The Report” (which he also wrote), plus he’s known as one of the top paid screenwriting doctors in Hollywood having worked on several major films like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “No Time To Die,” the “Planet Of The Apes” movies and more. Lately, he has moved more and more into television; he has a Climate Change series at AppleTV+ in the works and a musical series for AMC called “National Anthem.”
