‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Will Return To ABC Tuesday After Suspension

Caving to the pressure, bad press and major backlash after his suspension, including a growing chorus of A-list celebrities and Disney stars, ABC announced this afternoon that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will return to the air on Tuesday night. The network had pulled the show indefinitely after Jimmy Kimmel’s September 15 monologue about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk set off a political firestorm, fueled by affiliates like Nexstar and Sinclair and amplified by FCC chair Brendan Carr, a vocal Trump ally, who threatened regulatory consequences.

Kimmel’s remark—that the “MAGA gang” was “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them … doing everything they can to score political points from it”—was pointed but hardly out of bounds. Compared to the incendiary and divisive rhetoric Kirk himself trafficked in for years, Kimmel’s words were almost restrained. Yet ABC folded, yanking one of late night’s most recognizable platforms rather than withstanding pressure.

The backlash was swift and overwhelming. More than 400 Hollywood figures, including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Selena Gomez, signed an ACLU-organized open letter condemning the suspension. Civil liberties organizations and media unions echoed the outrage, warning that silencing a late-night host over relatively mild commentary created a chilling precedent for free expression. Fellow comedians piled on, with John Oliver blasting ABC’s decision as “laughably weak.”

Howard Stern condemned the suspension as censorship, canceling his Disney+ subscription in protest and accusing Disney of “cowardice in the face of government intimidation.” Stern, who has his own long history of clashes with the FCC, argued this wasn’t about standards or taste but about a corporation buckling to political bullying.

Inside Kimmel’s camp, longtime collaborator Sal Iacono hinted the public hasn’t heard the whole story, teasing that “bombshells” are still to come and admitting he “knows too much.” His cryptic warning suggests that the negotiations behind the scenes between Disney, ABC, and its affiliates could prove even more revealing than the suspension itself.

The political fallout only widened. Zohran Mamdani, Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, announced he would boycott a scheduled ABC town hall, slamming the network for its “cowardice in the face of authoritarianism.” According to CNBC, Mamdani argued Disney had placed corporate comfort and affiliate appeasement above the fundamental duty to defend freedom of the press. He wasn’t alone—several state and local officials and advocacy groups echoed the same refrain: if political intimidation can silence Kimmel, it can silence anyone.

The suspension also spotlighted the Trump administration’s role in shaping the environment of intimidation. Carr’s public threats of regulatory scrutiny, combined with a broader campaign of grievance politics, underscored just how dangerous it is when government officials use their positions to stifle dissent. The episode became a case study in how authoritarian instincts can intersect with corporate timidity, a collision that leaves satire and criticism hanging by a thread.

ABC now says, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will return after a “reevaluation of circumstances.” Still, the timing makes clear that the reinstatement only came after relentless pressure from Hollywood, unions, political leaders, and media watchdogs. The original suspension should be called what it was: a gutless act of self-censorship, a cowardly attempt to appease affiliates and regulators by sidelining one of late night’s most prominent voices.

Even with the news of Kimmel’s return, we have not heard the last of this issue, this kind of dangerous censorship and the Trump administration’s willingness to try and silence its critics. Tuesday night’s show will presumably be a must-watch ratings bonanza. Stay tuned..
