The Hulk Not The Villain In 'The Avengers'?

Ok, so Robert Downey Jr. has officially signed on for “The Avengers” movie (and “Iron Man 3”) and has Don Cheadle, right? Marvel sent around a press release that reads:

THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.

IESB.net seems to think this is veritable proof that the Hulk is not the villain in “The Avengers” movie, but considering a script hasn’t been likely written, and the movie isn’t due until summer 2011, we’re pretty sure it’s premature to say anything concrete about the film. Where their posit could be right? It’s unknown what other Marvel comic book properties Marvel Studios own, but a lot of the A-list Marvel characters are already owned elsewhere (Fox owns X-men and Daredevil, Sony owns Spider-Man, etc.), so it’s not like the Avengers team have that many A-list stars left (Hawkeye? Wonder Man? The Scarlet Witch? All B-list). They might not want to give up one of their starring heroes – The Hulk – and turn him into a villain, leaving their “supergroup” not all that super.
