Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Roars To A Gigantic $150 Million Debut Weekend [Box Office]

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” roared to a gargantuan $150 million debut this weekend. While that’s 28% down from the 2015’s massive $208.8M opening, it’s ultimately a small drop, plus that was the first ‘Jurassic’ film in nearly 15 years and nostalgia and anticipation for the film, much like the first “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was at a fever pitch. Nothing really outperforms the opening installment of a beloved franchise that’s returning decades later and ‘Fallen Kingdom’ held audiences fascination much more than many had expected. An A Cinemscore and competition from the monster hit of “Incredibles 2″ couldn’t stop it. You, also, have to factor in that ‘Fallen Kingdom’ is rotten on Rotten Tomatoes with a 50% score, but it’s apparently hugely critic proof and audiences still love this franchise. And astoundingly? ‘Fallen Kingdom’ is already at $711.5 million worldwide thanks to a two-weeks early international release. It’s not inconceivable that the movie hits $1 billion at this rate. The 2nd and 3rd weeks will tell the tale.

Speaking of, Pixar‘s “Incredibles 2,” the hit film shows very few signs of slowing down. While the animated ‘tooner fell 55% this weekend, that’s relatively small for a big blockbuster and the movie it still made $80 million in week two. The movie has made a fantastic $350.5 million domestically after just two weeks of release, and worldwide, it should hit $500 million by mid-week.

Warner Bros.’ “Ocean’s 8” cracked the $100 million mark which is a good sign in this day and age of non-superhero films, but it’s still got a long way to go before it can catch the $183 million of “Ocean’s Eleven” in 2001 and it’s probably not going to get there. Still, the film’s performed well.

Deadpool 2” crossed the $300 million mark domestically and cracked $700 million too globally. It’s likely going to fall short both domestically and worldwide behind its predecessor, and these franchises generally tend to rise in grosses with sequels when they are well-received, but it’s still a big success for 20th Century Fox and this R-rated franchise is very much alive and thriving.

5 weeks into release, “Solo: A Star Wars Story” has at least crossed the $200 million mark domestically which saves it from complete embarrassment at home, and it’ll soon pass “The Empire Strikes Back” (unadjusted for inflation), but it’s performing pretty pitifully for a blockbuster abroad, barely making the $150 million threshold. The film is at $353 million worldwide currently and can arguably hit to around $400 million something when all is said and done. “Star Wars” had released ten proper live-action films so far and ‘Solo’ will likely end up ninth domestically and dead last or 9th worldwide. It’s no wonder Lucasfilm are rethinking their approach to “Star Wars” anthology films.

Having crossed the coveted $2 billion mark, only the fourth film to ever do so, and still in the top ten, “Avengers: Infinity War” is still raking in the dough. It’s only $38 million away from the third-highest-grossing film title away from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but given the movie is in its eighth week of release, there might not be enough gas left in the tank to inch that high. But it could come pretty close.

In its third week of release, expanding into 348 theaters, Focus Features’Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” which is heartening in the age when civility and human decency are long dead. Maybe it’s nostalgia for a better time when people actually cared about one another (Fred Rogers was a lifelong Republican and wouldn’t be caught dead making excuses for kids held in cages).

Who gives a shit about a D Cinemascore, right? A24‘s horror “Hereditary” has now grossed $48 million worldwide, $35 million domestically. That’s the second highest grossing A24 film ever, having surpassed “Moonlight” and only second to “Ladybird.”  Lastly, “Black Panther” is just inches away from hitting the $700 million mark domestically and should probably hit that coveted figured next weekend.
