'Requiem For A Dream' Composer Honored At World Soundtrack Awards

You know of the the oft-discussed, ever-popular, Oscar-like World Soundtrack Awards, right? Now you do.

The awards were presented on Saturday and longtime Darren Aronofsky collaborator Clint Mansell – best know for his work on the aforementioned director’s “Requiem For A Dream,” and “The Fountain” (the former’s theme song being a track often recycled to goose weak film trailers) – was a double winner.

The composer/former Pop Will Eat Itself member won the prize for best original soundtrack as well as the Public Choice Award for his original ‘Fountain’ score (that was performed by Mogwai and the Kronos Quartet).

“The Fountain” got rather shat on by critics despite being quite the lovely metaphysical romance – albeit a love story spray-painted on a van by the guy who drew album covers for Yes (Roger Dean) – so it’s nice to see Mansell’s gorgeous heavenly score (one of our faves from 2006) get some overdue acclaim.

Mansell’s next score will appear in the romantic comedy, “Definitely, Maybe” which stars Elizabeth Banks, Ryan Reynolds and comes out early 2008.
