Disney Announces Marvel's 'WandaVision' Has Been Moved Up To A 2020 Release

Happy New Year and get ready, because Disney is determined to get you to sign up to Disney+ if you haven’t already. This morning, the streaming service shared a first look at its exciting slate of original and exclusive content set to premiere in 2020. Perhaps more importantly, in doing so, the service has revealed that one of its most-anticipated series, Marvel’s “WandaVision” which sees Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprise their Avengers roles of Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch and Vision, will be coming in 2020, rather than its initially intended spring 2021 release.

What does this mean? Well, “Marvel Studios The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” is already scheduled for fall 2020, so presumably, this means, “WandaVision” will arrive, sometime in the fourth quarter, and perhaps in November or December around the same time “The Mandalorian” first aired and helped make Disney+ a big splash.

It also means that “WandaVision” is probably ahead of schedule and that the studio is very confident in what the final product will be. Lots of mystery revolves around “WandaVision,” after all, Vision was killed in “Avengers: Infinity War,” but he’s clearly back somehow. “WandaVision” is also said to have the tone of a 1950s sitcom, which you can see in the official artwork. To many, this suggests a narrative that has been rumored for a long time: a loose adaptation, or the beginning of a loose adaptation of House of M, a Marvel storyline where the Scarlet Witch loses her mind. This might explain why Vision is suddenly back, and much of the storyline plays out in her mind.

It also may explain why Wanda is said to be a significant component of the “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” scheduled for a May 7, 2021 release. Marvel’s Kevin Feige has already said the events of “WandaVision” would lead to ‘Multiverse of Madness,’ so perhaps the good doctor is called in to help out Wanda. My bet? They’re setting her up to be a bad guy down the road, and both series and movie may be a little bit explicit about this.

Here’s the official announcement.

In 2020, Disney+ subscribers can look forward to a diverse line-up of new content including the highly anticipated return of Hilary Duff in “Lizzie McGuire,” “Marvel Studios The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “Marvel Studios WandaVision,” the final season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” the Muppets unscripted series “Muppets Now,” original movies “Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made,” “Stargirl,” “The Phineas & Ferb Movie: Candace Against the Universe,” and “Secret Society of Second Born Royals,” docuseries “Rogue Trip” and “Becoming,” and season two of hit series “The Mandalorian” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.” Disney+ is also the exclusive streaming home for the biggest blockbuster films from Walt Disney Studios, including “Aladdin,” “Toy Story 4,” and “The Lion King.”

“WandaVision” has no official premiere date, but bet on late 2020/Q4. The show also co-stars Kat Dennings, who plays Darcy in the original “Thor” series, Randall Park, the CIA agent Jimmy Woo seen in “Ant-Man & The Wasp,” Kathryn Hahn (“Transparent”), said to play a nosy neighbor, and Teyonah Parris who plays Monica Rambeau, the grown-up version of the 11-year-old version of the character seen in “Captain Marvel.” Marvel’s obviously throwing a lot of MCU connection into the mix.
